The Invisible Middle - When You’re Not Green Anymore, But Still Not ‘Next in Line’

You’re past the basics.

You’ve got a season or two under your belt. You know the routines, the standards, the expectations. You’re not the one asking how to fold a fitted sheet or tie a bowline anymore. But you’re also not quite “next in line.” You’re not being handed the next set of stripes. You’re in the middle. Capable, but not yet senior. Reliable, but still waiting your turn.

And that middle can feel long.

You’re training green crew but not getting trained yourself. You’re expected to step up but not being recognised for it. You’re hungry for more, but the industry keeps telling you to wait. It’s frustrating. It’s easy to start wondering if you’re doing something wrong.

But here’s the truth - this phase is normal and you’re not stuck. You’re building.

This is the season where you strengthen your base, where you get sharper, more consistent, and more respected. Where you stop needing to be told and start anticipating. Yes, it can feel like a holding pattern. But it’s also where you prepare for takeoff.

Still, don’t let it get in your head, you don’t have to force the jump. Not every next step has to be a hustle. Sometimes, the best move is to simply stay steady, stay switched on - and keep your eyes open.

Look around. Is there someone willing to take a punt on you? A vessel that sees your potential and trusts your instincts to allow you to grow into a new role.

That’s often how the step up happens - not through checklists, but through someone giving you a shot.

TL;DR

You’re not new, but you’re not senior. It’s a weird middle ground.

Use it to grow, not to spiral. Stay open, stay ready, and don’t be afraid to back yourself.

Sometimes all it takes is the right person on the right boat saying, “Let’s give them a chance.”
